Under IC 5-14-3, the public has the right to inspect and copy records held by any public agency in Indiana. In Lake, that means you can call the Clerk's phone line and ask about any case file, and they must tell you how to get a copy from the office. Walk-in requests get a response within 24 hours. Copy fees are $1 per page, with a $3 charge for each certified document. The Clerk accepts cash, money orders, and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover). There is a 3% fee on credit card use. American Express is not accepted at this Lake County office.

Lake County runs a cyclical reassessment. Each year, 25% of parcels get a physical inspection. The full cycle takes four years. If an inspector comes to your door, they carry an ID badge. If you disagree with your assessment, you can file a Form 130 appeal with the Assessor's office. The deadline is usually mid-June.

You start with the Assessor for a sales disclosure, then bring forms to the Auditor, then file with the Recorder. You can file property tax deductions online. Available deductions include the Homestead Deduction, Over 65 Deduction, Over 65 Circuit Breaker Credit, and the Over 55+ Tax Credit. Taxpayers do not need to re-apply each year unless they sell or change title.

Credit card use adds a 4% service charge with a $3.99 minimum. Gary's Clerk operates from two spots, 15 West 4th Avenue and 400 Broadway, Gary, IN 46402. The main phone number is (219) 881-6065. The Criminal Division answers at (219) 881-1263, and Civil at (219) 881-1354. Gary keeps longer hours than most, with criminal court open 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays.

East Chicago Clerk is at 3711 Main Street, East Chicago, IN 46312. Call (219) 398-2442. Crown Point City Court sits at 101 S. East Street, Crown Point, IN 46307. Judge Kent A. Jeffirs presides. Phone is (219) 662-3243. Walk-in hours are weekdays from 9:00 AM to noon, and court sessions run on Tuesdays from 1:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Lake County Marriage License Phone Line

You get a marriage license at the Clerk's Marriage Office at 2293 N. Main Street in Crown Point. Call (219) 755-3460 for questions. Both people must be at least 18 and show up in person with a valid driver's license or state ID. A Social Security number is required. Lake County Lake residents pay $25 in cash. Non-Indiana Lake residents pay $65, also cash only. The license stays valid for 60 days. There is no waiting period in Indiana.

You can start the application online at courts.in.gov/marriage before you visit in person. Fill out the form, then tell the staff when you arrive. Judge ceremonies are held Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM for an extra fee. If you need a certified copy of a marriage record for genealogy, it costs $1 per page and usually runs three pages. You can request up to three records at a time. Payment for copies is by cash, money order, or certified check. No personal checks. Make it payable to Lake County Clerk.

E-Filing and Phone Directory Access

Lake County uses the Odyssey eFile and Serve system. Attorneys are required to e-file. Non-attorneys can use it too but are not forced to. Three service providers handle e-filing: Tyler Technologies, Green Filing, and Corporation Service Company (CSC). All IV-D Juvenile and Small Claims filings from attorneys go through Odyssey and get processed through the Crown Point Clerk, not Gary Juvenile.

For online case searches, the MyCase system is free and covers all Lake County divisions. Search by case number, citation number, party name, or attorney name. You do not need hyphens or leading zeroes for case numbers. An asterisk works as a wildcard for partial names, and a sounds-like option helps with alternate spellings. Results cap at 1,000 per search. Many civil orders show up as PDF links you can download at no cost. Under IC 5-14-3-6, government offices in Indiana must respond to phone and in-person requests within 24 hours.
